Frequently Asked Questions

I haven't been to church in a long time. Is it okay for me to come?
ABSOLUTELY! We are always glad to welcome people who haven’t been to a church in a long time. We try to make our services “user friendly” and make it so that people can easily find their way.

Do I have to be a Lutheran to come to St. Mark?
NO! Many people come to our church who are not Lutheran.

What can I expect when I come to St. Mark Lutheran Church?
You can expect a friendly place where we gather together to praise our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for what He has done for us in His death and resurrection.  We are not perfect and that is why we celebrate God’s forgiveness.

Is there a dress code? What should I wear?
There is no dress code. You will find people wearing suits and also very casual clothes. All we ask is that it be decent.

Is there something for my kids?
We have a great variety of activities for kids of all ages. You can get a flavor of those through other places on this site.

What if I want to receive Holy Communion (the Lord’s Supper)?
As Lutheran Christians, we believe and teach that Christ’s body and blood are truly present in, with, and under the bread and wine. We also believe and teach that we receive all the treasured blessings Christ earned for us, forgiveness of sins, power over death and the devil, power to live the Christian life on earth, and to receive the goodness of the Lord. If you agree with this, you are welcome to join us.

I’m struggling with some personal problems. Is help available?
Yes. Our pastor would be happy to discuss this with you. He can also make recommendations of licensed counselors who could help. We also have members who have received additional training and can help with some problems.

What goes on at St. Mark Lutheran Church?
The best way to answer this question is to come and see. There are activities and studies that cover a variety of ages and interests. Look around this web-site and you will get some flavor.

How do I get involved?
The best way to get involved is to show up for whatever interests you. Most activities do not require any registrations.

How do I become a member?
If you are a member of another Lutheran church you can ask them to transfer your membership to St. Mark. If you are not a member of another Lutheran church you need to attend a Firm Foundation class. These classes are offered three times a year and there is no obligation in attending. The class covers the basic terachings of the Bible and the Lutheran Church.

Do you have air conditioning?
Sure! We open the windows and turn on the fans so we have a lot of air coming into the church.

What style of music can I expect?
Our 8:30 service uses more traditional music with organ accompaniment. Our 11:00 service uses more praise music and is led by our Praise Team with piano, keyboard, guitars and drums.

Does St. Mark have a preschool?
We certainly do. We have had a top-notch preschool for over thirty years. You can find out more about them elsewhere in this web-site.

What is the average age of your members?
St. Mark is a young congregation with a median age in the mid-thirties. We have a wide range in age with one member over 100 and quite a few under one year.

Where is St. Mark located?
I’m glad you asked. We are located in Kentwood, a southeast suburb of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  We are located on 52nd Street between Kalamazoo Avenue and Breton Avenue. There is a printable map located elsewhere in this web-site.
